Yakuza Heart Attack [Dec. 27th, 2009|05:46 pm]

If you are like me and you like both NEScore and old progressive rock and somehow wish they could both meshed into the same musical compositions, listen to this band. I recommend downloading the free album if they still have it out. This band, from what I can understand, isn't exactly a video game inspired band, more of a progressive Floyd/King Crimson inspired type of band, but they sound like game cover band anyway. Kind of the reverse of the video game cover bands, they do covers and inspired sounds from video games and in the process, either by accident or on purpose end up making progressive-sounding compositions (ie watching The Advantage do a concert blew me away).

I'm going through the past decade of LJ entries, and so far, the one that strikes me to repost is a forward from beechan2 from 2003

I completely forgot how hilarious this was. The fact that it's real is no surprise, and it's almost a parody of itself in that, yes, american kids entertainment CEOs from the 80s and 90s really were that incredibly stupid, and did in fact pull off stunts like this all the frigging time. The wheelchair takes the cake. I mean, that is something that is akin to the whole "add a black kid" and "add a dog" to the cartoons of the 70s and 80s. I'll be the first to admit that the cartoons I grew up with in the 80s were seriously the worst cartoons I've ever seen in the past 30 years. You kids today are lucky your cartoons are so much better than our crap.

Not like today where people at least sort of understand that kids want to see anime in a 'mostly' untouched format from the original, even so far as keeping the music in Japanese in some cases in the past 5-10 years.

snow [Dec. 20th, 2009|05:43 pm]

It snowed pretty good. I wanted to stay in all day but I got so bored I was compelled to go outside in the big aftermath of the snow. I was completely not looking forward to walking around in all that slippery mess, but I ran out of aluminum foil and I figured I might as well go out.

I found that despite the huge snowfall, New Yorkers had not only cleared out the streets, but completely cleared the sidewalks as well, to the point they were dry as a bone. Some areas looked like a machine had cleared the walkways. This surprised me, because in Virginia when it snows, the plows come through and clear out the main streets, but the side streets need to wait an extra day and the sidewalks are basically unusable or ridiculous to walk on. But here, the whole damn shebang was cleared out in a jiffy, roads and walkways. I had no issues walking around and wandering the neighborhood as I usually do on any other day.

I like how in such a short time you get a sense of all these characters, and you can just barely follow them all but you still can do it. Excellent use of about a million different japanese art styles as well.

The name Alma means "soul". From a guy who works at Pixar. Watch it now, it will be taken down after holidays.

I figured it out literally 2 or 3 seconds before the payoff. Perfect, I mean, perfect story planning, shot selection, timing, and direction to accomplish something like that.
